Holland is living up to its reputation as the land of the bicycle. Since the creation of the Ladies Tour of Qatar, Dutch representatives have systematically returned from Doha with the title.
For the fourth edition of the race, Holland’s cyclists will be making up a mini-pack within the pack, with fifteen Dutch ladies expected at the starting line on 1st February. Amongst them, initially most eyes will be on Kirsten Wild, victorious in 2009 and 2010, as well as Elen Van Dijk, the title holder. It is also probable that the Italians, who often show the most resistance to the Dutch in Qatar, will have their word to say. The road-racing world champion Georgia Bronzini, who is also boasts the most stage wins on the Ladies’ circuit, will be arriving with ambitions of victory, as will her countrywoman Monia Baccaille, who won the last stage of this race in 2011. The Australians, Germans, Frenchwomen, Belgians, Americans as well as the Chinese will also be aiming to use this first main event of the year to position themselves on the world stage. An unmissable date at the start of the cycling season, the Ladies Tour of Qatar this year celebrates its fourth edition, with the perspective of the Olympic Games in London next July for the women’s elite.
Before the Olympics however, the world’s leading women will be striving to shine on the roads of Qatar and follow in the footsteps of Dutchwomen Kirsten Wild (winner in 2009 and 2010) and Ellen Van Dijk (2011).
15 teams represented by 90 riders, will take starter’s orders on 1st February in Qatar, to battle for final victory and conquer the Gold Jersey awarded to the leader of the general classification.
